Causes of Blemishes, Acne, and Zits
Blemishes, acne and zits are caused by bacteria build up in the pores, excessive shedding of skin cells, production of oil by the oil gland, hormones, oil gland reproduction and less likely to cause problems with blemishes, acne and zits but still a problem for some is irritation or sensitizing reactions to cosmetics, specific foods (rarely), or medicines.

Bacteria forms inside the oil gland to produce a blemish due to dead skin cells and excessive oil inside the oil gland. Most blemishes are red and swollen and can be itchy and irritating.

Each hair follicle grows from a sebaceous (oil) gland that secretes an oily, firm wax called sebum. The structure that the oil gland and hair follicle share is the pore. As the pore becomes plugged, the blemish is the outcome. If the pore is open, without any skin covering, the top of the plug is exposed to air and darkens, causing a blackhead.

Whiteheads and blackheads become pimples when acnes begin growing inside the plug, causing irritation and inflammation. This inflammation and excess oil causes the wall of the oil gland to rupture, spilling the contents (oil, cell debris, bacteria, and all) into the surrounding skin tissue. The body's immune system then responds, sending lymph to the inflamed area to help with repair (and causing swelling), and you now have a pimple, zit or something can develop into acne.

Some people have particularly severe acne and zits. This may be because of genetic factors (family members have bad acne), hormonal factors or environmental factors for anyone with acne, zits or blemishes.

Caring for Acne, Zits, and Blemishes

Keeping your pores clear and clean is vital in your acne treatment regimen. A blocked pore allows the oil and skin cells to mix, forming one of many types of acne. With whiteheads and pustules you may be able to pop the pimple if it seems like it is ready to burst through the skin. Never try and pop a pimple if it is deep below the skin, it could cause the bacteria to burrow deeper into the skin, causing greater damage. Papules are little red dots that should not be attempted to pop or squeeze. It will cause further irritation and no other results. Blackheads are often the most frustrating of acne to get rid of. It has a larger life span than pustules and whiteheads and may be deeper within the skin. Therefore, a blackhead can take many weeks before it drains to the top of the skin. If you suffer from blackheads you should consult your dermatologist for proper treatment.

All types of acne are treatable, whether you are prone to blackheads or common pimples; there are plenty of medications, both prescription and over the counter that can assist you. As you can see though, acne forms beneath the skin, meaning it is crucial to keep your pores clean to allow for oil to escape to the top of the skin. Washing your face a few times a day is the first step in keeping your pores clean and clear. Speak to a dermatologist to determine prescription treatment for acne or other skin blemishes.
