A regular concealer is out of the question when it comes to hiding marks, bruises, scars or birthmarks. You need an opaque concealer that is designed with a higher level of pigment and heavier consistency than the average cover-up in order to hide these problems.

Orange Masking Cream™ will cover a bruise that is blue or yellow in color. It contains all the undertones (pink, peach and yellow) which are necessary in concealing and neutralizing bruises, birthmarks, brown spots and some types of scars. It is also used as a foundation over heavier concealers to even out the skin tone.

WHAT CAUSES BIRTHMARKS?

Birthmarks

Birthmarks get their name for one simple reason: They are marks that are present on the skin of a lot of newborn babies! A baby can develop birthmarks either before he or she is born or soon after birth. One of the most common types of birthmarks is called a hemangioma (he-man-jee-o-muh). These birthmarks happen when many new blood vessels group together in one place on the skin. No one knows what causes blood vessels to group together, but it's good to know that most birthmarks don't hurt at all and they usually aren't a sign of any kind of illness.

One kind of birthmark is called a strawberry birthmark. It is bright red and sticks out of the skin, so it looks a little bit like a strawberry. Some strawberry birthmarks go away on their own by the time a child is about 5 years old. Almost all strawberry birthmarks go away by themselves by 9 years old.

There is another type of birthmark that is beneath the outer layer of skin. It's called a cavernous (ka-vur-nus) birthmark. Cavernous means "like a cave," which is deep in the earth. This type of birthmark is deep beneath the outer layer of skin and is puffier than a strawberry birthmark. It's also a different color: not red like a strawberry, but more bluish-red. Cavernous birthmarks usually don't go away by themselves.

Port wine stains are another kind of birthmark. This isn't puffy or raised like a strawberry or cavernous birthmark - it's level with the outer layer of skin. A port-wine stain is an area of skin that is either maroon (a purplish-red color) or dark red. It gets its name from port wine, a type of wine that is dark maroon. Birthmarks can usually be concealed with a good concealer product.

Bruises

Most bruises form when small blood vessels (capillaries) near your skin's surface are broken by the impact of a blow or injury. When this happens, blood leaks out of the vessels and initially appears as a bluish-black mark. Eventually your body reabsorbs the blood and the mark disappears. Some people — especially women — are more prone to bruising than are others. As you get older, several factors may contribute to increase bruising, including:

• Aging capillaries. Over time, the tissues supporting these vessels weaken, and capillary walls become more fragile and prone to rupture causing bruising.
  
• Thinning skin. With age, your skin becomes thinner and loses some of the protective fatty layer that helps cushion your blood vessels against injury. Excessive exposure to the sun can affect your skin much like aging does.

When using concealer to even skin tone, go to the darker color as opposed to light.

What does a bruise look like and why does it change color?

Generally, the harder the blow, the larger the bruise. However, if you bruise easily, a minor bump, one you may not even notice can result in substantial discoloration. Your arms and legs are typical locations for bruise. Bruises can usually be concealed with a good concealer product.

Bruises change in appearance over time and it is possible to tell by looking at a bruise how old it is. When it first appears, a bruise will be reddish looking, reflecting the color of the blood in the skin. By 1-2 days, the reddish iron from the blood undergoes a change and the bruise will appear blue or purple. By day 6, the color changes to green and at day 8-9, the bruise will appear yellowish-brown. In general, the bruised area will be repaired by the body in 2-3 weeks after which the skin will return to normal. Bruises can usually be concealed with a good concealer product.

SCARS

A scar disfigures the skin, and often the psyche of the individual obligated to live with it. But advances in personal care now make it fairly easy to conceal the severity of your scar. Scars can usually be concealed with a good concealer product. The proper color of concealer and application will make all the difference in covering up a scar.
